Though laminar flow hoods come in various styles, they all rely on either vertical or horizontal laminar airflow. Horizontal laminar flow hoods move airflow through the work zone, parallel to the worksurface, before exhausting out the front of the cabinet, while in vertical laminar flow hoods air moves down vertically, striking the work surface before exhausting via the cabinet front. Horizontal laminar flow hoods are most commonly used for applications with smaller pieces of equipment on the work surface as large equipment can cause turbulence. Vertical laminar flow cabinets, however, can accommodate larger equipment.
