3D Printer Emissions Endanger COVID Volunteers

With the COVID-19 pandemic continuing worldwide, hometown heroes still regularly feature in the news. Many schools and individuals have jumped at the chance to try to provide the personal protective equipment (PPE) hospitals and first responders often lack. They donate time and resources to help generate face shields and other PPE to help keep people safe. Yet, in doing so, they might be putting themselves and their families in danger.

As 3D printing’s popularity and accessibility have grown, so too have concerns about its safety. Numerous studies have concluded that 3D printing releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and ultrafine particles (UFPs) harmful to users and building occupants. Since more 3D printers than ever before are used in schools and homes, those occupants are often children.

One of the most effective methods to improve 3D printer safety is through the use of a ductless fume hood. Ductless fume hoods protect the user and the environment from hazardous vapors generated on the work surface. When used with optional HEPA/ULPA filtration, ductless fume hoods can also capture the harmful particulates generated during 3D printing.
